Martyn’s Law – What it means for your business and what to expect from premises in the future
Martyn’s Law, officially known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, is landmark legislation designed to enhance public safety and security in the United Kingdom. It is named in tribute to Martyn Hett, who tragically lost his life in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017. This law places specific duties on those responsible for certain publicly accessible premises and events to take measures that will help to reduce the risk from, and improve responses to, potential terrorist attacks.
What Martyn’s Law Means for Visiting Premises in the Future:
Once fully implemented, Martyn’s Law will mean that when you visit a qualifying public venue or attend a qualifying event, certain measures should be in place to enhance your safety. The specific measures will vary depending on the size and capacity of the venue. This could include things like:
- For smaller venues (Standard Tier): Improved preparedness, such as having staff trained on how to respond to a terrorist attack, and having clear procedures in place (like evacuation plans).
- For larger venues (Enhanced Tier): More robust security measures, such as security checks, increased surveillance, and documented security plans.
In essence, Martyn’s Law aims to create a security culture where venues and event organizers are proactive in protecting the public, and that there are consistent standards in place. This will hopefully provide greater reassurance and protection for everyone attending public places.
