Beyond the Switch: How to Give an Hour for Earth This Spring

Every year, the world witnesses a powerful moment of unity: Earth Hour. On Saturday, March 28, at 8:30 PM local time, millions will flip the switch to send a message of solidarity for our planet. But this year, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is asking us to do something even bigger.

From March 23rd through April 30th, we are invited to join a global effort to “Give an Hour for Earth.” It’s a call to turn a single symbolic hour into thousands of hours of action for nature.

What Does it Mean to “Give an Hour”?

Giving an hour means dedicating 60 minutes of your time to an activity that benefits the planet or reconnects you with the natural world. WWF has set an ambitious goal to bank 150,000 hours of eco-positive action this spring, and every single minute counts toward that total.

Whether you are a fitness enthusiast, a foodie, or an aspiring advocate, there is a way for you to participate.

How to Get Involved

The campaign is built around a simple three-step process:

  1. Choose an Action: Visit the WWF Hour Bank to find over 60 ways to give back.
  2. Give Your Hour: Set aside intentional time between March 23 and April 30 to complete your activity.
  3. Bank Your Hour: Log your time on the WWF website to help showcase the collective power of people caring for the planet.

Need Inspiration?

If you aren’t sure where to start, here are a few ways to spend your hour:

  • Reconnect with Nature: Go birdwatching in a local park, take a mindful “nature walk” without your phone, or spend an hour stargazing.
  • Take Environmental Action: Participate in a community cleanup, plant a pollinator garden, or write a letter to your local representatives urging them to support grasslands and biodiversity.
  • Sustainable Living: Conduct a “food waste audit” in your kitchen, cook a plant-based meal for your family, or host a swapping party to trade clothes and books with friends instead of buying new ones.
  • Learn and Inspire: Listen to a nature-focused podcast (like Nature Breaking), watch an environmental documentary, or share your “lights-off” moment on social media using #BiggestHourForEarth.

Why Now?

Nature is our life support system, providing the air we breathe and the water we drink. Yet, we are facing the twin crises of climate change and rapid biodiversity loss. By giving an hour, you aren’t just doing a task; you are joining a global community that believes a sustainable future is possible.

This spring, don’t just watch the lights go out. Use that time to spark a change.

Take time for the planet. March 23 – April 30.
