As digital technology evolves, new online trends and spaces emerge rapidly. One growing area of concern highlighted by online safety and safeguarding experts is the rise of “com groups” (short for “community groups”).

Understanding these online spaces—and how young people interact with them—is essential for parents, carers, and workplace mentors supporting young learners and school leavers.

What Are Com Groups?

“Com groups” are online subcultures and chat groups operating across popular social media platforms, messaging apps, and gaming servers (such as Discord, Telegram, and TikTok). While many online communities are positive spaces for shared hobbies, certain “com” networks are associated with high-risk behaviour, peer pressure, and online harm.

Key risks associated with unmonitored com groups include:

  • Cyberbullying & Harassment: Targeted negative behaviour and peer exclusion within group chats.
  • Exposure to Inappropriate Content: Unfiltered sharing of harmful images, explicit material, or dangerous trends.
  • Online Grooming & Exploitation: Bad actors taking advantage of anonymous group settings to build trust with vulnerable young people.

Recognising the Signs & Staying Informed

As a provider committed to learner safety, we encourage parents, carers, and employers to maintain an open dialogue with young people about their online lives. Look out for sudden changes in online behaviour, extreme secrecy around screens, or distress linked to social media use.

To help families understand these networks, recognise red flags, and learn practical steps to keep young people safe online, we recommend reading the comprehensive guide provided by Safeline:
